For thousands of years, people all over the world have enjoyed grapes as a juicy, refreshing snack. Though green and red grapes are most common, we can even buy pink, yellow, black, and many other varieties these days.
As well as tasting delicious, grapes are packed with nutrients. This includes :
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamins C and K
With all this goodness, you should be eating this magical fruit every single day. After a few weeks, you’ll enjoy some amazing benefits!
Eat Grapes Reduced Inflammation
Firstly, swelling can occur as an immune response but it can also come from a mistake. When chronic, the cells are damaged, and it also increases the risk of heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
Fortunately, one study showed that the anti-inflammatory compounds in the bloodstream can increase with just one and a half cups of grapes; 24 men had metabolic syndrome and saw their health improve.
Increased Bone Strength
For our bones, grapes can be fantastic because the fruit contains vitamin K and other essential minerals. In case you didn’t know, vitamin K helps the bones retain important calcium. What’s more, grapes themselves contain calcium alongside magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, and potassium.
Eat Grapes Reduced Risk of Disease
As we’ve already seen, grapes can offer anti-inflammatory compounds which negate the impact of free radicals and repair damage to the cells. Sadly, free radicals can increase the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease…unless neutralized by antioxidants.
If you’re looking for antioxidants alone, go for red grapes because they contain polyphenol resveratrol, this antioxidant reduces blood sugar levels and is great for the heart. Elsewhere, you’ll also benefit from lycopene, beta-carotene, vitamin C, ellagic acid, quercetin, and lutein.
Boosted Immune System
Did you know that the immune system prevents illness while also treating it? That’s right, and grapes will boost this system (and ensure you rarely miss a day of work again!). As well as the resveratrol and vitamin C we’ve already discussed, test tube studies have shown how grapes can stop the herpes virus, yeast infections, and chicken pox.
Increased Eye Health
Once again, we come to resveratrol because this is known to reduce the risk of diabetic eye disease, glaucoma, and cataracts. What’s more, the compound could protect human retinal cells from UV damage, and this has been shown in test tube studies. With zeaxanthin and lutein, two antioxidants, your eyes are also protected from the blue light emitted from modern cell phones.
Slowed Ageing Process
Ever look in the mirror and feel angry at the ticking hand of time? Don’t worry, you aren’t alone. In grapes, there are plant compounds known to affect the ageing process; in animal studies, a gene called SIRT1 was activated by resveratrol. As a direct result, their lifespan increased.
On the outside, your skin is kept healthy thanks to the vitamin C. Elsewhere, it may also benefit from the encouragement of collagen production.
Finally, you might not think it looking at a single grape, but some studies have shown an improvement in language ability, memory, and attention thanks to the fruit. With a 250mg supplement each day, the study showed that baseline scores in a cognitive test can improve. Elsewhere, another study suggested a boost to memory recall and mood after eight ounces of grape juice per day.
Start Eating Grapes Today
In case you needed an excuse to enjoy these sweet treats, your body will reward you (as long as you eat them consistently and in moderation!). To prevent getting bored, try mixing up the way you consume grapes. Why not try different varieties, grape juice, and even red wine (be sensible, of course!)?
