8 Foods to Avoid After Turning 30

While we’re young, having fast food five times a week seems like a great idea. As we get older, however, our body’s ability to handle junk food deteriorates. Not only does unhealthy food cause more problems for the body than before, we’re also at a higher risk of many diseases after reaching 30; this includes diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

With this in mind, we have a list of eight foods you should be looking to avoid after entering your thirties!

1. Farmed Fish

Did you know that farmed fish have such little room they eat the feces of their fellow fish? Considering farmed fish accounts for up to 70% of all fish at local markets, this is terrible news. To look healthy, farmed fish are often dyed and fed antibiotics. Therefore, we recommend sticking with fresh fish markets (we hope you agree!).

2. Fruit Juice

‘But anything with the word ‘fruit’ is healthy, right?’. Unfortunately, no. Fruit has lots of natural sugar, so fiber is a key ingredient to moderate it. When juices are extracted for consumers, the fiber remains with the fruit which means nothing will moderate the sugar when you consume the drink (it all hits the bloodstream at once).

Sadly, nutrients can also be destroyed when pasteurized and some manufacturers add even more sugar during production.

3. White Bread

Empty of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins, white bread is almost useless. In fact, we can also add bagels to this because they lack fiber and nutrients too. Yet, what these two do have is sodium (bagels) and an ability to spike your blood sugar levels (white bread). When you choose whole wheat, your digestive system will thank you for the fiber and you benefit from lots of vitamins and minerals.

4. Flavored Yogurt

Unfortunately, one flavored yogurt can have more sugar than the American Heart Association recommends across a whole day. If you want yogurt, we recommend Greek or plain products before then combining it with fresh/dried fruit. While yogurt does boost the digestive system, those with artificial flavorings will cause you more harm than good.

5. Baked Goods from the Store

We all love baked treats, and many will have memories of baking with grandparents before enjoying the delicious rewards. If you want baked goods, stick to this tradition. Although not exactly healthy, home-cooked products are certainly better than from the store due to the hydrogenated oils used by manufacturers. At home, you’re in control of what goes in (and you can create memories with family and friends!).

6. Microwave Popcorn

As we get older, we try to keep our mind active with games and activities. In addition to this, your diet is important and microwave popcorn will negatively impact your memory. Why? Because of the trans fats in the fake butter with which each kernel is coated.

As well as increasing inflammation, they can destroy cells and prevent the body from producing omega-3 fatty acids. The plastic coating in the bag has also been linked with cancer; this is also true of diacetyl (an ingredient in the butter).

7. Soy

Unfortunately, soy is highly genetically modified and the long-term effects of this are still unknown. However, we do know it can interfere with thyroid function while spiking inflammation in the body. Since it interrupts phytoestrogen, it can also be dangerous for growing children.

8. Anything with a Straw

Finally, as we age, collagen production slows, and the dreaded signs of aging appear. When you use a straw, you have to purse the lips; an action that can cause wrinkling.
