Help Your Arthritis by Avoiding 10 Foods

When it comes to arthritis, this is actually a term that covers a number of different problems. Whether in the knees, hips, shoulders, or wrists, however, it can be categorized as inflammation in the joints. After speaking with your doctor, they’ll recommend medication and exercise…but what about food?

Considering we eat multiple times a day, we think this is just as important. In fact, studies have shown that some foods make arthritis pain and discomfort worse. Here are 10 of them!

How does alcohol affect rheumatoid arthritis?

Not strictly a food, but we want to start with alcohol since you’ll find red wine in plenty of ‘foods you should eat with arthritis’ lists. While it does help decrease inflammation, the antioxidants and flavonoids will only work when consumed in moderation. If you drink too much, you could actually do more harm than good.

Vegetable Oils

On the face of it, switching to vegetable oil seems to be a positive move. Yet, their omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is very high. In other words, you’ll be triggering inflammation more than you’ll be helping it. Sadly, it’s thought that most Americans have an omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 20:1…the recommended ratio is 1:1.

Dairy

We’ll let you in on a secret; it’s actually the additives and hormones that get added to dairy that puts it on lists like this one. Instead, we recommend choosing Greek yogurt and other organic products high in probiotics. Not only will it help your gut, the number of arthritic attacks you experience should also reduce.

Refined Carbs

Found in bread and white flour, refined carbohydrates are considered an HGI (high-glycemic index) food. As well as being linked with obesity and diabetes, HGI foods encourage the production of advanced glycation end (AGE) products and others that make joint pain worse.

Salt and Arthritis

We should all stay away from salt, this much has been made clear in recent times. Salt will;

  • Increase the risk of heart disease
  • Increase blood pressure
  • Draw water from the body
  • Trigger inflammation
  • Prevent the kidneys from processing sodium

With the latter, this will force the bloodstream to take extra salt thus causing complications with arthritis.

Synthetic Sweeteners

If you want a natural sweetener that will boost your health, choose honey. Avoid sugar, avoid artificial sweeteners, and avoid corn syrup (normally high in fructose). With synthetic sweeteners, they affect our body’s ability to use glucose before then triggering inflammation with cytokines.

Trans Fats

Thanks to technology (and some very clever experts!), we now understand just how dangerous trans fats can be. While we once thought that margarine was the solution to all our problems, it turns out our joints and heart disagree. Our bodies cannot break down these fats, so our cells are damaged by the resulting inflammatory response.

Could Gluten Be Triggering Your Arthritis?

Even if you aren’t strictly intolerant of gluten, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make changes. Although it probably isn’t surprising at this point, gluten can cause inflammation. As a side note, sourdough from a bakery can actually be great for inflammation.

Fried Foods

Whether onions rings or chicken nuggets, it’s time to put the fried foods down. As we saw with refined carbs, fried foods can encourage the production of AGEs; as we know, fried foods are also highly calorific and unhealthy.

Artificial Foods

Finally, artificial foods are technically anything not grown naturally. Unfortunately, things like Pringles don’t grow in the ground (no matter how much we would love for this to be true!). If you look at the ingredients in artificial products, you’ll find all sorts of preservatives, chemicals, and lots of salt. We’re all allowed the odd treat but eating these foods regularly will lead to inflammation and weight gain.

If you can avoid these ten foods, your joints will thank you and life doesn’t have to be an uncomfortable nightmare from one day to the next!
